As of July 1, 2024, California’s Senate Bill 731 (SB 731) expanded record-sealing rules across the state, including in San Clemente. The law now allows many nonviolent, nonserious, and nonsexual felony convictions to qualify for automatic sealing, even for individuals who served time in state prison. For more serious convictions, people can still apply for relief by filing a petition with the court. In addition, the California Department of Justice must conduct monthly reviews to identify and process cases that meet the new criteria.
